Mumford & Sons Debut The New Basement Tapes Cover In New York

Mumford & Sons performed a concert last night at United Palace Theatre in New York City. The audience was treated to the band’s first live performance of a song originally recorded by The New Basement Tapes.
“Broad-Shouldered Beasts” from the 2015 Mumford & Sons album Wilder Mind opened Monday’s show. The main set mixed songs from that record with selections from 2012’s Sigh No More and 2009’s Babel along with a few covers. A rendition of Beyonce’s “Pray You Catch Me” featured Kevin Garrett sitting-in, while Gill Landry guested on a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer.” The group was also joined by Minke for a version of “Awake My Soul.”
The show featured the group performing an acoustic “Cold Arms” around a single microphone and an a capella “Sister” with the same setup. The encore started with “Lovers’ Eyes” before the band’s debut cover of “When I Get My Hands On You,” a song frontman Marcus Mumford recorded as a member of the supergroup The New Basement Tapes along with Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith and Jim James. The song features lyrics penned by Bob Dylan in 1967 and was followed by the band’s first live performance of the Babel track “Where Are You Now?” since 2011.
