Mountain Jam 2016 Day Two :: 6.3.16 :: Hunter Mountain :: Hunter, NY
The 12th annual Mountain Jam festival held at Hunter Mountain in Hunter, New York continued Friday with another day filled with collaborations. Headliners Gov’t Mule welcomed Wilco guitarist Nel Cline to join their take on their David Bowie/Bob Marley mash-up “Rebel Rebel Music.” Later in the set, host and Mule frontman Warren Haynes welcomed Marcus King and members of the guitarist’s band for a rendition of “What Is Hip?” Haynes had sat-in with The Marcus King Band during their afternoon set earlier in the day.
Prior to Mule’s performance, Wilco commanded the main Mountain Stage with a career-spanning set that saw Jason Isbell emerge to go head-to-head with Cline on the Wilco/Woody Guthrie original “California Stars.” Isbell was on hand with his band The 400 Unit who played a main stage set earlier in the evening. Americana rockers the Chris Robinson Brotherhood held down the Valley Stage between Isbell and Wilco’s performances and Mountain Jam first-timer Courtney Barnett included her cover of “New Speedway Boogie” from the Grateful Dead tribute album ‘Day Of The Dead’ as part of her main stage appearance.
Friday’s action also featured performances by bluegrass outfit Love Canon, roots rockers Nahko And Medicine For The People, pop trio And The Kids, Brooklyn-based funk/soul collective Turkuaz, slide guitarist Matt Lorenz’s The Suitcase Junket project and funk foursome The New Mastersounds who provided the late night entertainment.
