More Dead & Company Tour Debuts In Minneapolis

Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann along with Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti and John Mayer brought the inaugural Dead & Company tour to Minneapolis last night for a performance at the Target Center. Fourteen shows in, the band has yet to play a show that didn’t include at least one debut and Saturday’s show saw two Grateful Dead originals added to the mix.
https://www.instagram.com/p/-XgTQgGqI-/Dead & Company opened the evening with a brief jam that gave way to a slow and loping “Jack Straw.” From there, John Mayer stepped up to lead the second-ever D&C “Big Boss Man” before Weir delivered the band’s first “Mexicali Blues,” which was the song the Grateful Dead played most that Dead & Company had yet to perform. The set continued with Mayer fronting the group on “Row Jimmy” and Weir channeling Jerry for “Ramble On Rose.” “Hell In A Bucket” then made its second D&C appearance leading into a “Casey Jones” set closer.
A rousing “Cumberland Blues” started the second set and was followed by the evening’s second tour debut – “Cryptical Envelopment.” Dead & Company didn’t transition from “Cryptical Envelopment” into “The Other One,” instead opting for “Uncle John’s Band.” A lengthy “Scarlet”/”Fire” gave way to the nightly “Drums”/”Space” segment. A Weir-sung cover of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” emerged out of “Space” and was followed by the set-closing sequence of “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad” and “One More Saturday Night.” Weir and Mayer shared vocals on the “Friend Of The Devil” encore. Dead & Company now head to Colorado for a pair of shows at 1stBank Center in Broomfield.
