Molly Tuttle Guests With Billy Strings At Station Inn In Nashville

Billy Strings continued his Streaming Strings virtual tour on Saturday night at Nashville’s legendary Station Inn. Strings welcomed singer-songwriter and guitarist Molly Tuttle for a slew of songs in the second set.

Billy is fresh off Thursday and Friday performances at the Brooklyn Bowl Nashville on his Streaming Strings tour, which sees the guitarist playing empty venues in Music City. For his first Station Inn performance, Billy took a more traditional bluegrass route, paying homage to a pantheon of bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Flatt & Scruggs, Peter Rowan, the Stanley Brothers and more with songs they either wrote or popularized.

Billy and his band — bassist Royal Masat, banjoist Billy Failing and mandolin player Jarrod Walker — kicked off the show with the Stanley Brothers instrumental, “Train 45″ followed by the Jimmy Rogers recorded “In The Hills Of Tennessee” in a set that also included Bill Monroe’s “Dusty Miller,” “A Good Woman’s Love,” “Letter From My Darling” and “Lonesome Moonlight Waltz.” The first set also saw nods to Flatt & Scruggs with “Down The Road,” Peter Rowan with “The First Whipporwill,” Doc Watson with “Salt Creek” and the “King Of Bluegrass” Jimmy Martin with “Sophronie” and the first frame closer, “Sunny Side Of The Mountain.”

Strings got the second set underway with an original, “Freedom” from his 2019 album, Home, before diving right back into Bill Monroe with “Southern Flavor.” Tuttle would emerge three songs into the set for the traditional fiddle tune, “Black Mountain Rag.” Billy and Molly — who are old friends and former roommates — kept the trads rolling with “Cold Rain And Snow” featuring Tuttle on some stellar lead vocals. Molly would stay on for Stanley Brothers’ “Rank Stranger” and the Flatt & Scruggs classic “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down” among others. After Tuttle departed, two Monroe songs followed: “With Body And Soul” and “Kentucky Mandolin.” Strings and company closed out the evening with “Long Gone.”
