Billy Strings continued his Streaming Strings virtual tour at an empty Brooklyn Bowl Nashville on Friday night. Strings and company welcomed singer-songwriter and mandolinist Sierra Hull for a good portion of the second set to close out the Brooklyn Bowl portion of the tour.

Billy Strings and his band — bassist Royal Masat, banjo player Billy Failing and mandolinist Jarrod Walker — kicked off the first set with a pair of career-spanning originals beginning with “Taking Water” from the guitarist’s 2019 album, Home, followed by the instrumental “Thirst Mutilator” from Billy’s 2016 self-titled debut EP. The first set also contained a number of covers including New Grass Revival’s “This Heart Of Mine,” banjoist Bill Emerson’s “Home Of The Red Fox,” Danny Barnes’ “Pretty Daughter” and a pair of Stanley Brothers tunes in “How Mountain Girls Can Love” and “I Only Exist.” Strings closed out the first frame with the title track from his debut LP, Turmoil & Tinfoil.

The covers kept rolling in the second set which got underway with John Hartford’s “All Fall Down” and more Stanley Brothers in “A Robin Built A Nest On Daddy’s Grave.” Billy then welcomed Hull — as he had welcomed Marcus King the night before — for a pair of tunes from the legendary Doc Watson: “Walk On Boy” and “My Love Come Rolling Down.” Sierra then provided the band with a double mandolin attack on Blackfoot’s “Train, Train” and to keep things interesting a cover of Post Malone’s “Circles.” Sierra would stay on for the final Stanley Brothers of the evening, “Daybreak In Dixie.” Billy Strings closed out the livestream with his own “Meet Me At The Creek.”
