Billy Strings formally began his Streaming Strings tour of empty Nashville venues on Thursday night at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville. Strings and his band were joined by Marcus King for a pair of songs during their second of two sets.
The quartet featuring Billy on guitar, bassist Royal Masat, banjoist Billy Failing and mandolin player Jarrod Walker bookended three covers with stretches of originals to kick off the run last night. A string of “Watch It Fall,” “Slow Train” and “While I’m Waiting Here” was followed by takes on Flatt & Scruggs’ “Doin’ My Time,” Doc Watson’s “I’m Going Fishing” and “China Doll” by the Grateful Dead. Strings and company then paired “So Many Miles” and “Dealing Despair” before closing the frame with “Enough To Leave” and “Away From The Mire.”

Last night’s second set got underway with the beloved “Dust In A Baggie.” Next, the four-piece jammed “Pyramid Country” into a cover of JJ Cale’s “Ride Me High.” Marcus emerged after “Must Be Seven” to reprise his King & Strings collaborations will Billy and the band. King added to covers of Gershwin’s “Summertime” and Jimmy Reed’s “Big Boss Man.” Strings, Masat, Failing and Walker went on to end the evening by working “Ernest T. Grass” into “Little Maggie.”
