moe. played their fourth show in a row at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California on Sunday. While the first three performances took place indoors in the Grate Room, Sunday’s concert was a co-headlining affair that also featured Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band at the venue’s outdoor Beach Park space. Members of the two acts came together to end the night with a collaborative encore.
moe. took the stage first for the special Sunday matinee concert. Guitarists Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey, percussionist Jim Loughlin, drummer Vinnie Amico and bassist Rob Derhak opened with the familiar “Seat Of My Pants” > “Sensory Deprivation Bank” pairing. The latter gave way to the instrumental “Defrost” before Garvey fronted the group on “Akimbo.” moe. continued a focus on classic material by jamming “Moth” into “Brent Black.”

Derhak laid down a meaty solo within “Brent Black” and then led moe. through the first “Tambourine” since April 28, 2017. Rob was also on lead vocals for the “Happy Hour Hero” that followed. moe.’s set rolled on with Schnier’s “Downward Facing Dog,” the only original played on Sunday debuted in the 21st Century. The five-piece had one more beloved pairing in store to end the set, as they worked the instrumental “Jazz Wank” into “Buster.” Loughlin had a turn in the spotlight for the “Immigrant Song” encore, as the Led Zeppelin cover first performed by moe. at this year’s Summer Camp Music Festival continues to find its way into the rotation.
Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band began their Sunday afternoon set with a cover of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” sung by drummer Alex Koford. Next up was Phil’s first turn of the day in the spotlight for “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.” Then, Grahame Lesh led the group on “Bertha” ahead of guitarist Ross James fronting The Terrapin Family Band on “West L.A. Fadeaway.”
There were more Grateful Dead classics in store from Phil and The Terrapin Family Band to end the set. The next portion of the show saw Alex, Grahame and Ross combine forces on “Jack Straw,” James belt out “Alligator” and Koford sing the tender “Wharf Rat.” Phil and his ensemble then jammed “The Wheel” into “Cumberland Blues” before concluding the main set with a pairing of “Liberty” and “New Speedway Boogie.”

Members of moe. loaded the stage for a memorable three-song encore. Phil handled bass duties throughout with Derhak adding vocals at points as well as percussion. The collaborative encore began with a cover of Neil Young’s “Down By The River” featuring lead vocals from Al Schnier. Al also sang the “Deal” that followed. The night came to a close with a cover of The Band’s “The Weight.”
