moe. Digs Deep For Bust Outs At 9:30 Club In Washington, D.C.
By Scott Bernstein Sep 26, 2015 • 10:20 am PDT
Upstate New York jam act moe. continued a three-show visit to Washington, D.C. on Friday night with a performance filled with rarities and inventive sequences at the 9:30 Club. The setlist featured a pair of songs that hadn’t been played in over a year as well as a Rush cover and fan favorite rarity.
moe. came out of the gates with the high octane “Timmy Tucker” > “It” pairing. Guitarist Al Schnier then led the group through their first take on Camper Van Beethoven’s “Good Guys And Bad Guys” since September 24, 2014. “Good Guys And Bad Guys” has been a part of moe.’s repertoire for over two decades, but last night’s version was just the fifth since 2004. Later in the first set, moe. inserted one of their earliest originals, “Funky Reuben,” within “Crab Eyes.” “Funky Reuben” had been on the shelf since December 12, 2013 and has only been performed three times in the past five years.
The second set wasn’t without its standouts either as the band opened with percussionist Jim Loughlin’s beloved rarity “Farmer Ben.” Loughlin raps on the number which had only been performed twice prior in 2015. Next up was a cover of “Tom Sawyer” by Rush which also had only been performed twice prior in 2015. Set two came to a close with an inventive “Kids” > “George” > “Kids” sequence, while “Spaz Medicine” > “Akimbo” served as the encore.
moe. returns to the 9:30 Club tonight.
