Modest Mouse brought their summer tour with Pixies and Cat Power to Kurt Vile‘s hometown of Philadelphia last night. Vile came out towards the end of Modest Mouse’s set to join the band on a pair of oldies including a deep cut purportedly last played live nearly 15 years prior.
The 24-date co-headlining run featuring Pixies and Modest Mouse with special guest Cat Power began on May 31 in Charleston, South Carolina and on Wednesday visited The Mann in Philadelphia. All three acts previously teamed up for a joint tour last summer. Pixies capped the night after the Modest Mouse performance featuring Vile’s surprise guest appearance by treating fans to a set heavy on material from classic albums Doolittle (1989), Bossanova (1990), Surfer Rosa (1988) and Come On Pilgrim (1987).

Modest Mouse — guitarist/frontman Isaac Brock, multi-instrumentalist Tom Peloso and drummers/percussionists Joe Plummer and Jeremiah Green along with touring members bassist Russell Higbee and guitarist Jim Fairchild — delivered a 14-song set at The Mann. Kurt Vile emerged late in the performance for “The Waydown” and “Broke.”
Isaac Brock and Kurt Vile dueted on “The Waydown,” a song Modest Mouse originally released on their 1997 EP, The Fruit That Ate Itself. Vile also handled the main riff with his signature guitar tone. “The Waydown” had been shelved by Modest Mouse since a December 2009 tour of Ireland and the UK. The most recent rendition before last night was played on December 15, 2009 in London.

Kurt Vile stuck around to contribute both guitar and vocals to “Broke,” which was also a tour debut. “Broke” dates back to its inclusion on the 1996 Modest Mouse EP Interstate 8. Isaac Brock thanked Vile for sitting in at the end of the two-song collaboration. “I love you guys!” Kurt exclaimed before leaving Modest Mouse to close out their set with beloved staples “Night On The Sun” and “Float On.” Brock and his bandmates performance in Philly also included a cover of The Cure’s “A Forest,” which the group debuted at the start of the tour.
