Mike Dillon Guests With Umphrey’s In New Orleans

Road warriors Umphrey’s McGee brought their current tour to New Orleans last night, where Mike Dillon came out to play vibes and percussion on a long-lost cover as part of the band’s two-set performance at The Civic Theatre.

Dillon emerged in the middle of the first set to lend a hand on a cover of Herbie Mann’s “Muscle Shoals Nitty Gritty.” Umphrey’s had last played the song way back on February 9, 2013 -a gap of 129 shows. The second set started off with a lengthy, well-jammed “Hurt Bird Bath” and included both of the group’s “Nurse” songs -“Night Nurse” and “Day Nurse.” Umphrey’s also treated Crescent City fans to the first version of The Cars’s “Just What I Needed” since it was debuted back in February. The sextet brought the show to a close with a “Divisions” encore that featured a tease of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme.”
