Mickey Raphael Guests With The Avett Brothers In Charlotte

By Scott Bernstein Jun 21, 2018 9:21 am PDT

Country music legend Willie Nelson made up a performance in Charlotte yesterday that was rescheduled after he took the stage on May 26 without playing a note. Thankfully Nelson’s set on Wednesday at PNC Music Pavilion went off without a hitch. North Carolina natives The Avett Brothers was among the other acts on the bill and welcomed a longtime member of Willie’s band for a sit-in.

Last night’s concert featured sets from Willie Nelson & Family, The Avett Brothers, Jamey Johnson and Sarah Shook and the Disarmers. The Avetts were the evening’s penultimate performers and delivered a 12-song set just about 10 miles away from their hometown of Concord. Seth Avett, Scott Avett & Co. focused on a career-spanning batch of originals throughout the performance with one exception.

The Avett Brothers brought out Willie Nelson & Family harmonica wiz Mickey Raphael for a cover of Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried” towards the end of their set. Raphael took a passionate solo as part of the song that the Avetts have performed regularly since debuting “Mama Tried” at Madison Square Garden in New York City on April 8, 2016 just two days after Haggard’s death.
