Members Of Blackberry Smoke Sit-In With Gov’t Mule In Pittsburgh

Last night headliners Gov’t Mule and openers Blackberry Smoke brought their Smokin’ Mule Summer Tour to Pittsburgh for a performance at Stage AE. Once again Mule utilized their encore to welcome members of the opening act for a run through well-known favorites.

Guitarist Warren Haynes led Gov’t Mule through a rendition of Tom Waits’ “Going Out West” to open their main set following Blackberry Smoke’s performance. The headliners’ set mixed originals such as “Mule,” ”Rocking Horse” and “Game Face” with covers like Elton John’s “Have Mercy On The Criminal” and Billy Cobham’s “Stratus.” A string of originals including “Painted Silver Light,” “Devil Likes It Slow,” “Time To Confess,” “Bad Man Walking,” “Lola,” “Leave Your Light On” and “Mr. Man” filled out the second half of the performance.

Thursday’s encore started out with all of Blackberry Smoke – guitarists Charlie Starr and Paul Jackson, drummer Brit Turner, keyboardist Brandon Still and bassist Richard Turner – joining Gov’t Mule on the classic “Statesboro Blues” which was a staple of The Allman Brothers Band’s repertoire and saw Mule bassist Jorgen Carlsson sitting out. The following rendition of the ABB’s “Blue Sky” – featuring a jam on the Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower” – saw Carlsson back on stage in place of Richard Turner with the rest of Blackberry Smoke also augmenting the finale.

Audience-shot video footage of the collaborative encore was captured by Don Carpenter, watch below:
