Lotus released their 11th studio album today, How to Dream in Color. The 12-track LP is out on streaming and a limited-edition 2 LP, 140g vinyl in blue/white marble (side A/B) and ultraclear (side C/D) is available via the band’s website.
Press materials for How to Dream in Color noted how the album was both an innovation in Lotus’ sound and a tribute to late percussionist Chuck Morris, who died tragically in a kayaking accident with his son Charlie last year.
Creating How to Dream in Color has been both a tribute and a transformation for Lotus. Following the tragic passing of longtime percussionist Chuck Morris, the band adapted their recording process to honor his memory while embracing new creative directions. The band gravitated toward a layered drum sound to maintain the rhythmic complexity that Morris contributed to their music.
For How to Dream in Color, Lotus eschewed their usual “live in the studio” approach and built the “tracks in layers, creating a collage-based approach that allowed for intricate and diverse soundscapes,” as per the press release.
How to Dream in Color kicks off with “How Do I Come Down,” which was also the record’s lead single and boasts sizzling guitar from Lotus’ newest member guitarist Tim Palmieri, anchored by a locked-in beat from drummer Mike Greenfield along with vocal contributions from longtime collaborator Gabe Otto.
“This track is a manifesto for the entire album – a dream scenario where anything is possible yet flows like water,” Luke Miller (guitar, keys) said of “How Do I Come Down.”
Bassist Jesse Miller added, “The tonality moves between major and minor keys, akin to driving through a mountain highway, transitioning between light, dark, and the exhilarating unknown.”
