The Myrrors: Hasta La Victoria

Happy New Year RecommNedsters! While the calendar has flipped and there’s already great 2018 releases I’m ready to share with you, I’d like to clear a few from last year’s batch that I never got around to detailing for you. In fact, I had to go back and check to make sure I didn’t already rec this first one, the newish record from The Myrrors. Out on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond, Hasta La Victoria is psychedelic perfection. The jams are deep here, my friends, a full sonic assault of drone-y explorations. This Arizona-based band has been featured here before, but they’ve never put out anything like this before. And if you’re in NYC, they’re playing a rare gig in town Saturday night. Sweet!

Mammal Hands: Shadow Work

On the completely other end of the spectrum is Mammal Hands. Some of the more inventive jazz acts these days are coming out of the U.K. and these guys are right up there with the best of them. Piano trio plus saxophone, their sound draws on a range of influences from electronic to rock to more ethereal genres. Put together on their newest record, Shadow Work, out a couple months back, it is a gorgeous, spiritual, compelling music that defies labels. Highly recommended for lovers of great music (that’s you!).

Detroit Rebellion: The Man

Let’s keep things totally random here and finish up with a record that I’ve been enjoying since it came out this past summer, The Man, the newest record from Detroit Rebellion. Their music is a stripped down drums-and-guitar-and-vocals chug-a-lug that is found somewhere directly in between a garage and a honky-tonk. They’re from Providence, but the sound feels like it could be found on any highway in America, it just wants to move. The title track was one of my favorites from last year, but the whole thing is a rollickin’ blues rock stunner. Enjoy!
