LCD Soundsystem Debuts 3 New Songs At Grand Opening Of Brooklyn Steel

James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem played their first show of 2017 last night by opening Brooklyn Steel in the East Williamsburg neighborhood of New York City. LCD will play a total of five shows at the new venue and coming into the evening the big question was whether the band would debut any material. The question was answered right away as posters from the band and its label included a plea to fans asking them not to film the new songs LCD Soundsystem would be performing.

LCD Soundsystem reunited last year after a five-year breakup and at the time one of the reasons given was that Murphy had written a batch of new songs and was looking to record them with the band. The group focused on festival appearances in 2016 and there were no signs of new material. Fast forward to Thursday night, where LCD Soundsystem opened Brooklyn Steel with a set of beloved classics. The band then returned for a three-song encore of all new tunes before ending the night with a second encore of “Dance Yrself Clean” and “All My Friends.”

There is still no word on exactly when LCD Soundsystem’s first new album since 2010’s This Is Happening is coming. Last night’s debuts were apparently titled “Tonight,” “Call Police” and “American Dream.” Stereogum was on hand and a review on the site discusses what the trio of premieres sounded like, “The three songs felt like a very logical extension of This Is Happening, seven years later — more ’80s elements emphasized, long songs that subtly build and change, glossier, all that. Murphy promised a fan the new album is ‘almost done,’ so who knows when we’ll finally hear this thing. But based on what we heard last night, it’s going to be worth the wait.”

LCD Soundsystem returns to Brooklyn Steel tonight.
