King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard rolled their tour into Nashville for a concert at Ascend Amphitheater last Saturday night. The band was joined by former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg who sat in on the song “Perihelion.”

The guest spot came near the end of KGLW’s main set. Leading up to sit-in, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard kicked off the show with “Evil Death Roll.” A few songs later, the band played “Black Tooth” for the first time since October 2, 2022, ending an absence of 118 shows.

Drummer Michael Cavanagh dedicated “Le Risque” to Johnny Cash before singing lead on the song off their recently released 26th studio album, Flight b741. In the middle of the set, frontman Stu Mackenzie paused to examine some items tossed on stage, including a t-shirt mashing up the familiar Phish logo with the word Gizz.

“Oh cool, Gizz Phish!,” Mackenzie said. “Thank you Trey. Our friend Trey.” Stu then put the Gizz/Phish t-shirt on and wore it for a song.

Later in the set, Cavanagh spoke to the audience.

“We’ve got a very special guest, his name is Jay Weinberg,” Cavanagh said. “He’s one of my all-time favorite drummers and he’s going to play ‘Perihelion’ for us, thank you very much.”

Cavanagh sat in a chair in front of his drum kit, which was taken over by Weinberg. The guest drummer, whose father is E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg, was a member of Slipknot between 2014 and 2023. As previewed by Cavanagh’s introduction, Jay Weinberg and the band delivered the hard-hitting “Perihelion” from KGLW’s 2019 album, Infest the Rats’ Nest.

After Weinberg’s exit, King Gizz finished off the show with the live debut of “Chang’e” from their 2023 album, The Silver Cord, and the closer “Extinction” which featured a tease of the Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic.”
