‘The Dripping Tip’ Dip: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s Stu Mackenzie Goes Swimming At Thompson’s Point Show

“We’re gonna go into that muddy-as-fuck body of water next to the airport and do some weird shit.”

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s tour landed at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine on Tuesday night. The scenic outdoor venue is situated along the Fore River and KGLW frontman Stu Mackenzie decided to test the water by going for a quick dip during “The Dripping Tap” finale.

“Let’s go for a swim!” Mackenzie shouted mid-song. “Let’s go for a swim!”

He then proceeded to remove his shirt, shoes, socks and eventually his in-ear monitors as well. Stu then prepped the audience on his plan.

“Does anyone know where the lemonade stand is?” Mackenzie said. “They told me to go to the left of the lemonade [stand]. What’s going to happen is, I’m going to jump out and we’re gonna have a big group cuddle, yeah. And then we’re gonna go into that muddy-as-fuck body of water next to the airport and do some weird shit and then come back, sound good?”

The barefoot, shirtless Mackenzie then crowd-surfed his way to the back of the venue, to the left of the lemonade stand, and walked down the shore of the Fore River and jumped in. A soaked Mackenzie was passed over the audience as he crowd-surfed back to the stage to rejoin his bandmates for the thrilling conclusion of “The Dripping Tap.”

The 20-minute “The Dripping Tap” contained elements of “Antarctica” and altered lyrics to reference Portland, Maine. The band also previewed Mackenzie’s dip in the river, mistakenly referencing his swimming in a nearby lake.

Tuesday’s setlist also featured the live debut of “Rats In The Sky” from their recently released 26th studio album, Flight b741. Last night’s concert, like the rest of the shows on the tour, was livestreamed for free via KGLW’s YouTube channel (bootlegging of which is encouraged by the band).
