King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard returned to Red Rocks outside Denver on Sunday. The Australian psych-rockers kicked off this year’s run by playing “Hog Calling Contest” for the first time, busting out a song for the first time in nearly six years and once again welcoming ex-Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg for a two-song sit-in.

KGLW opened this year’s Red Rocks run with a sequence constructed of “Daily Blues” segueing into “The Bitter Boogie,” which went into “Muddy Water” ahead of a return to “The Bitter Boogie.” The group then premiered “Hog Calling Contest,” a countryfied rocker sung by multi-instrumentalist Ambrose Kenny-Smith that appeared on their recently released album, Flight b741.

“We’re gonna play a very old, very very very old song,” guitarist Joey Walker then told the audience. “So old, that you people won’t even care, not even on a nostalgia level. So fuck it.”

“This song’s called ‘Elbow,’ which is the first song on our first album,” guitarist Stu Mackenzie added.

The blistering lead track off King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s 2012 debut album, 12 Bar Bruise, “Elbow” was last played by KGLW in November 2018, spanning over 250 shows between setlist appearances.

Following “The River,” ex-Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg – who sat-in with King Gizz at their recent Nashville show – once again took the place of KGLW drummer Michael Cavanagh. After being wished a happy birthday, Weinberg accompanied KGLW on “Le Risque” (which featured an audience member singing one of the verses) and “Gila Monster.”

The rest of the set was colored in with “Dragon,” “Planet B,” the first “Stressin’” since 2022, “Gondii,” “Chang’e,” and “Extinction,” with “Am I In Heaven?” closing out the night.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will take the Red Rocks stage in a matter of hours for a matinee performance, followed by another late show slated for this evening. Free livestreams are available via KGLW’s YouTube channel.
