King Crimson unveiled the trailer for the upcoming documentary In The Court Of The Crimson King. The film directed by Toby Amies and made with full cooperation from the band will premiere at SXSW this March.

In The Court Of The Crimson King, which takes its name from the legendary prog-rock act’s 1969 debut album, features footage from King Crimson’s 2018/2019 tour as well as interviews with founding guitarist and lone musician included in every lineup Robert Fripp and other members from throughout the group’s illustrious career along with archival clips. Initially titled Cosmic F*Kc, the documentary was first announced in 2019.

“It is the dream band viewed from outside. It’s the band you could do anything you wanted to in it,” former drummer Bill Bruford quipped in the trailer. “This is the first King Crimson [lineup] where there’s not at least one member in the band that actively resents my presence,” noted Fripp. Other past and present members heard from in the 99-second preview include guitarist Adrian Belew, saxophonist Mel Collins and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald.

“We have been approached by various broadcasters, but felt that the ‘standard talking head’ format was becoming increasingly cookie cutter and uncreative,” King Crimson’s manager David Singleton explained to Rolling Stone. “We therefore approached Toby Amies, an independent filmmaker, and asked him to make an original music documentary, to reimagine the format, and gave him complete creative freedom to do so. So the film is really sanctioned by the band only in as much as they set the ball rolling and gave Toby the access and interviews he requested. Thereafter they happily ceded all creative control.”
