Steve Kimock and Friends kicked off a four-night stand at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, CA; where the ensemble mixed tunes from the guitarist’s repertoire with songs Bay Area icons Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders would often perform with their various projects in the mid ’70s.

Kimock was joined by longtime collaborator Bobby Vega on bass, Furthur’s Jeff Chimenti on keys, ALO guitarist Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz and Garcia/Saunders drummer Bill Vitt for Thursday night’s show and they will back him for the remainder of the run as well. For the first set, the band offered Garcia/Saunders favorites “It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry,” “Gomorrah,” “Harder They Come” and “Boogie On Reggae Woman” as well as Kimock classics “Tangled Hangers” and “You’re The One.” The closing stanza included takes on Saunders’s “Soul Roach,” Soul Survivors’s “Expressway To Your Heart,” Nix/Penn’s “Like A Road” and more.

Here’s the setlist from last night’s show:

Set One: Train to Cry, Gomorrah, Harder They Come, Tangled Hangers, Boogie on Reggae Woman, You’re the One

Set Two: It’s Up to You, Soul Roach, Sun Sun Sun, Like A Road, Expressway To Your Heart, Feel So Bad
