Leon Bridges Joins Khruangbin In Dallas
Watch collaborative versions of "Chocolate Hills" and "Texas Sun" from the start of Friday's encore.
Khruangbin welcomed special guest Leon Bridges to share the stage for two songs during their Friday night concert in Dallas. Bridges emerged to front the trio on the live debut of “Chocolate Hills” from their forthcoming Texas Moon EP and also lead Khruangbin on the title track from their 2020 collaborative EP, Texas Sun, at The Factory in Deep Ellum.
Friday’s Khruangbin performance began with the fitting selection of “Friday Morning.” The song was one of five from 2018’s Con Todo el Mundo played as part of the trio’s main set. Bassist Laura Lee, drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson and guitarist Mark Speer also treated fans to “August 10,” “Lady and Man,” “Evan Finds The Third Room” and “María también” off the LP.
Khruangbin’s debut studio album, The Universe Smiles Upon You, was represented by “Dern Kala” and “White Gloves.” Additionally, the group ended the night with “People Everywhere (Still Alive)” off the 2016 record. The setlist also included “Pelota,” “So We Won’t Forget” and “Time (You and I)” from Khruangbin’s most recent LP, Mordechai.
As usual, the trio played a medley towards the end of the concert. The piece incorporated elements of “Rapp Snitch Knishes,” “Gazillion Ear” and “Deep Fried Frenz” by MF DOOM as well as Elton John’s “Bennie And The Jets,” AC/DC’s “Back In Black,” Snap!’s “Rhythm Is A Dancer” and more. Khruangbin went on to cover Kool & The Gang’s “Summer Madness” before the aforementioned “White Gloves” and “María también” closed the main set.
Leon Bridges was born and raised in nearby Fort Worth so it shouldn’t have come as a huge shock that Khruangbin’s fellow Texan appeared with the group. Texas Moon arrives through Dead Oceans, in partnership with Columbia Records and Night Time Stories Ltd, on February 18. “Chocolate Hills” is one of five tracks featured on the EP. The four musicians previously performed “Texas Sun” live earlier this year at the Hinterland festival and during a 2019 concert in Khruangbin's hometown of Houston. Khruangbin closed Friday’s show sans Bridges with an extended “Time (You and I)” and classic “People Everywhere (Still Alive).”
