Leon Bridges Joins Khruangbin In Houston
By Andy Kahn Nov 4, 2019 • 7:41 am PST
Khruangbin was joined by fellow Texas-native Leon Bridges during their hometown concert in Houston on Saturday night. The collaboration at Bud Light Lawn at White Oak Music Hall featured the Khruangbin/Bridges’ collaborations “Texas Sun” and “C-Side.”
Saturday’s bill included opening sets by Houston’s own The Suffers and DJ Sun. In addition to Bridges, Khruangbin was also augmented throughout the show by Will Van Horn on pedal steel guitar and Charlie Perez on percussion, as well as Chase Jordan on vibes. The set saw bassist Laura Lee, guitarist Mark Speer and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson pulling from their 2015 debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You and its 2018 follow-up Con Todo El Mundo. They also worked up a medley of “Regulate” (Warren G.), “Apache” (Sugarhill Gang), “True” (Spandau Ballet), “Sukiyaki” (Kyu Sakamoto) and “Wicked Game” (Chris Isaak) which was followed by Z.Z. Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man.”
