Guitarist John Mayer brought the spring portion of his 2019 World Tour to a close on Thursday with the second of two shows at The Budokan in Tokyo. One night after welcoming Ed Sheeran to the stage at the same venue, Mayer dusted off a cover of Bob Dylan‘s “Buckets Of Rain” as part of Thursday’s concert.
The format for each night of the 10-show tour featured a full band set followed by an acoustic interlude, a second full band set and encore. Mayer kicked off the concert with “Belief,” the first of two songs he played with Sheeran on Wednesday. The rest of the opening frame was heavy on tour staples including “Love On The Weekend,” “Who Says,” “Changing” and “Something Like Olivia.” John ended the initial portion of the show with “Why Georgia” from his 2001 debut studio album Room For Squares and the 2018 single “New Light.” The Connecticut native encouraged the audience to dance along with his during the 10th “New Light” of the tour.

After “In Your Atmosphere” opened the acoustic portion of the night, Mayer reached for “Buckets Of Rain.” He last performed the song from Bob Dylan’s iconic 1975 album Blood On The Tracks way back in 2013 as per Setlist.FM. Dylan recorded the live album Bob Dylan At Budokan at the venue on February 28 and March 1, 1978. Next, the guitarist went back to Room For Squares for beloved classics “Your Body Is A Wonderland” and “Neon.”
The final set of the tour began with “I Guess I Just Feel Like,” Mayer’s most recent single. “Rosie” and “In The Blood” were followed by “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room,” the only other song besides “New Light” played at each show of the run. Less frequent numbers “The Age Of Worry” and “If I Ever Get Around To Living” led into the pairing of “Waiting On The World To Change” and “Dear Marie” to close the frame. For the encore, John showed off his piano skills on just the second “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me” of the tour and said farewell with “Gravity.” Next up for the guitarist is Dead & Company tour, which begins on May 31.
