Acclaimed singer-songwriter John Hiatt teams up with the Jerry Douglas Band for Leftover Feelings, a collaborative album set for release via New West Records on May 21. Today, Paste premiered the official video for Leftover Feelings single “Mississippi Phone Booth.”

John Hiatt and the Jerry Douglas Band assembled at the historic RCA Studio B in Nashville to record the 11-track LP. Jerry Douglas served as producer for Hiatt’s follow-up to 2018’s The Eclipse Sessions.

“I was immediately taken back to 1970, when I got to Nashville,” Hiatt said of his experience entering the legendary studio. “You can’t not be aware of the records that were made there…Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Waylon Jennings doing ‘Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line’ (which is referenced in the new song ‘The Music Is Hot’). But that history wasn’t intimidating, because it’s such a comfortable place to make music.”

The ensemble filmed the “Mississippi Phone Booth” video at the Cannery Ballroom in Nashville. Ted Roach and Lagan Sebert directed the visual. “I maintain that I write fiction, but my stories are based on life experiences, or the experiences of people I know, or things I’ve read about and so on,” Hiatt noted regarding the song. “And this one in particular chronicles my last sort of run with trying to make alcohol and drugs work successfully in my life, I’ll just put it that way!”
