Happy Birthday John Fogerty: Performing Live On ‘Austin City Limits’ In 2004
John Fogerty celebrates his 76th birthday today. The famed Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman was born on May 28, 1945 in Berkeley, California. Fogerty began performing in 1959 with proto-Creedence bands the Blue Velvets and continuing in the 1960s with The Golliwogs.
In 1966, however, John was drafted into service. While he never saw action in Vietnam, Fogerty’s songwriting in Creedence Clearwater Revival — who adopted the name in 1967 shortly before Fogerty was discharged — was an outspoken voice against the war with songs like “Fortunate Son” and “Run Through The Jungle,” which define the sound of the Vietnam era to this day. CCR was not only socio-politically conscious but also wildly commercially successful in a short span of time. Fogerty’s immense skill as a songwriter garnered the band an incredible run of nine Top 10 singles between 1968 and 1972, including signature songs like “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Green River” and “Born On The Bayou” among others.
Fogerty would also go on to have a successful solo career including his landmark 1985 solo album Centerfield and hit of the same name as well as with Blue Moon Swamp in 1997. In 2004, the guitarist and singer-songwriter appeared on Austin City Limits in support of his album Deja Vu All Over Again. The title track was a comment on another war, this time in Iraq.
While Fogerty kicked off his 2004 ACL appearance with two of the aforementioned songs, “Born On The Bayou” and “Green River,” he also got into material from Deja Vu All Over Again including “Sugar Sugar (In My Life),” “Rhubarb Pie” and the title track. Additionally, John included two songs from Blue Moon Swamp, “A Hundred And Ten In The Shade” and “Hot Rod Heart.” The show also contained the CCR favorite “Down On The Corner” as well as a set ending string of hits including “Travelin’ Band,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Fortunate Son” and “Proud Mary.”
