Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Shares Official Audio From Night 2 Of January Capitol Theatre Run
By Scott Bernstein Mar 30, 2018 • 10:30 am PDT
Tribute act Joe Russo’s Almost Dead began 2018 with a three-night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York that spanned January 12 – 14. JRAD debuted three songs as part of the second show on January 13 and today have unveiled a crispy soundboard matrix recording of the Saturday night special.
Drummer Joe Russo, guitarists Scott Metzger and Tom Hamilton, bassist Dave Dreiwitz and keyboardist Marco Benevento opened the show on January 13 with a seamless run of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Sugaree” > “Fire On The Mountain” > “Good Lovin'” > “They Love Each Other.” Up next was the evening’s first debut as Russo handled vocals on “Pride Of Cucamonga.” The quintet then dug in for nearly 20 minutes on “Playing In The Band” to close the frame.

JRAD’s began the second set on January 13 at The Cap with “Row Jimmy.” Just when it appeared the group would work the improv out of “Row Jimmy” into “Terrapin Station,” they embarked on a more rocking jam before finally starting “Lady With A Fan.” The band wound up performing both “Lady With A Fan” and “Terrapin Station” from the suite that forms the title track of the Grateful Dead’s famed 1977 studio album. Metzger then led the group on a wild “I Need A Miracle” that evolved into an instrumental, truncated version of Led Zeppelin’s “Your Time Is Gonna Come,” the evening’s second debut.
Tom Hamilton stepped to the mic to front “Ramble On Rose” after JRAD’s brief but fruitful Zeppelin cover. Almost Dead concluded the second set with “The Music Never Stopped” and a sequence that tied together “Cats Under The Stars” with “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” and “We Bid You Goodnight.” Marco Benevento served as frontman for the beginning of the five-piece’s encore on January 13. He led the group on their version of Chuck Berry’s “The Festival” before the night came to a close with a rousing “I Know You Rider.”
