Joe Russo’s Almost Dead wrapped a three-night run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Sunday. The Cap finale saw the band unveiling a cover of the Allman Brothers’ “Don’t Want You No More.”

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead — drummer Joe Russo, guitarist Tom Hamilton, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, keyboardist Marco Benevento and guitarist Scott Metzger — offered a relatively straightforward Dead set for the first frame, kicking off with a substantial “Foolish Heart” led by Hamilton.

A typically stellar JRAD transition dropped the band into Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried,” led by Metzger who would also helm the ensuing “Feel Like a Stranger.” The band then tacked Jerry Garcia Band favorite “Cats Under the Stars” on the tail end of “Help on the Way” and “Slipknot!” The first set wrapped with “Iko Iko.”

JRAD launched set two with some smoking slow blues on “It Hurts Me Too” before heading into the psychedelic Dead classic “St. Stephen.” JRAD then returned to the blues with “Don’t Want You No More.”

A song originating in a post-Steve Winwood Spencer Davis Group, “Don’t Want You No More” was popularized by The Allman Brothers Band. ABB included an instrumental version of the song — which they embellished to great effect — to kick off their 1969 self-titled debut album. It would become one of their signature early instrumentals in the live setting.

JRAD’s premiere rendition was anchored by Russo’s powerhouse drumming and saw some spicy percussion organ from Benevento before Hamilton brought the tune to a peak. The band then jumped into a sizzling “I Need a Miracle,” led by Metzger, ahead of cooling things down with Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.”
