Joe Russo’s Almost Dead continued the 2017 installment of their annual Fall Ball run at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on Thursday night. The five-piece tribute act played their fourth of six shows that make up this year’s Fall Ball. Guitarist Scott Metzger’s 40th birthday was celebrated throughout a night that also featured a special guest and a pair of rarities.
Metzger, Tom Hamilton, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo and Dave Dreiwitz opened the festivities with an expansive “Throwing Stones.” The five-piece began the song with 40 hits in honor of Scott’s birthday. “Jack Straw” emerged out of “Throwing Stones” and led into a Benevento solo and duo jam featuring Marco and Joe. A tasteful “Ramble On Rose” followed along with portions of the “Weather Report Suite” that hadn’t been performed since April 22, 2015 – a span of 100 shows. Metzger then led a “Black Throated Wind” that featured a jam on The Knack’s “My Sharona.” JRAD didn’t finish “Black Throated Wind” and instead ended the set with a “Scarlet Begonias” > “West L.A. Fadeaway” sequence. The sold-out crowd honored Scott by singing “Happy Birthday To You” with many in the audience sporting “Metzger 40” shirts made for the occasion.
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead began the second set with a jam that eventually gave way to their first rendition of “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” since last year’s Fall Ball. The quintet returned for more improv ahead of a move towards “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” Instead of “Franklin’s Tower,” JRAD segued “Slipknot!” into their second ever cover of Radiohead’s “The Bends.” Almost Dead’s only other version of the title track from Radiohead’s 1995 album took place in Raleigh on Halloween ’15 – a span of 71 shows.
Later in the set violinist Katie Jacoby joined the five-piece for “Tennessee Jed” and an adventurous “Truckin'” that featured tons of teases. JRAD concluded the night by picking a Bob Dylan cover for the encore as the group played “Tell Me, Momma” for just the second time in their history. The run continues on Friday night and a live webcast is available via nugs.tv.
