Last night Joe Russo completed an August residency at Threes Brewing in Brooklyn, New York that went so well he’s doing it again in September. Russo has called upon some of his favorite musicians to help round out the lineup for a series of three September shows at Threes Brewing, one of which includes the return of long-lost jam act RANA.
The September residency starts on September 14, when Russo will be joined for a set by guitarist Robbie Seahag Mangano at 8 p.m. Sam Cohen then plays a set of his own at 9 p.m. On September 21 Russo will be joined by guitarist Jonathan Goldberger for his 8 p.m. set before Chris Harford & The Band Of Changes takes the stage at 9. The residency comes to a close on September 28 with an 8 p.m. set from Russo, multi-instrumentalist Stuart Bogie and guitarist Scott Metzger before Metzger reunites with his RANA bandmates for a set at 9 p.m. $10 is the suggested donation at the door for each performance.
So what’s RANA? Take a dash of Talking Heads, a smidge of Ween and add parts Phish, The Clash and Led Zeppelin along with a heroic dose of their own original sound and you get an approximation of what RANA brought to the table in their early ’00s hey day. The New Jersey based quartet features Metzger, bassist Andrew Southern, drummer Ryan Thornton and keyboardist Matt Trowbridge. RANA cut their teeth at clubs like NYC’s famed Wetlands Preserve in the early ’00s before sadly calling it a day towards the middle of that decade. The rockers have played a few shows since, but it’s been a while since our last dose of RANA.
