Joe Bonamassa & Gov’t Mule Trade Sit-Ins On Cover From Allman Brothers Catalog & More At Wolf Trap

Joe Bonamassa and Gov’t Mule initiated a co-headline run at the Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia on Wednesday. Bonamassa and Mule guitarist Warren Haynes swapped sit-ins during the Washington D.C. area concert.

Gov’t Mule took the stage first at Wolf Trap last night, kicking off their set with “Mr. Man” off Mule’s 2004 LP, Déjà Voodoo. The quartet also performed a pair of tracks off their most recent studio album Peace… Like A River, “Peace I Need” and “After The Storm,” alongside staples such as “Banks Of The Deep End,” “Sco-Mule” and “Soulshine.”

Additionally, Mule covered Son House (“Grinning In Your Face”), Memphis Slim (“Mother Earth”) and Al Green (“I’m A Ram”). A fourth cover saw Joe Bonamassa joining Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Bonamassa got right to it, trading sultry riffage to open up Blind Willie McTell’s “Statesboro Blues,” also famously covered by The Allman Brothers Band. The acclaimed guitarists also went toe-to-toe in the body of the blues standard, slow-boiling solos to smoking heights.

Joe kicked off his set with a pair of originals, “Breakthrough” and “Trigger Finger.” The guitarist also led his band through songs by Bobby Bland (“Twenty‐Four Hour Blues”), Eric Clapton (“Mainline Florida”) and Delaney & Bonnie (“Well, Well”), among other nods.

Haynes emerged for a take on “Stratus,” the title track off drum legend Billy Cobham’s 1981 album. The guitarists delivered extended solo runs and squared off once again on the Cobham cut. Watch video from the sit-ins below:
