Jim James Mixes Solo Material With Covers At Surprise New York City Show

On Wednesday afternoon My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James played a rare Jim James & Friends set in New York City, where he was backed by a band that included members of Louisville’s Twin Limb and Seth Kauffman of Floating Action. James mixed material from his 2013 solo album Regions Of Light And Sound of God with a few choice covers in front of a crowd of hundreds in NYC’s Soho neighborhood.

Jim James seven-song performance came in celebration of the opening of car maker Cadillac’s Cadillac House. The vocalist started the set with three songs of his solo LP: “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.),” “Know Till Now” and “Dear One.” James and his band then treated fans to covers of “Raspberry Beret” by Prince and “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star, both of which My Morning Jacket recently played. Jim James and Friends ended the set with two more off Regions Of Light And Sound of God as “Of The Mother Again” and “A New Life” closed out the performance.

After last weekend’s run at Red Rocks, Jim James’s next scheduled performance comes in August when My Morning Jacket plays this year’s Lockn’ Festival in Arrington, Virginia.
