An upcoming installment of Jerry Garcia’s GarciaLive archival series features a previously uncirculated recording of Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders‘ show at the Boarding House in San Francisco on January 23, 1973. The Jerry Garcia Family and Round Records previewed GarciaLive Volume 12, which is due on December 20, with audio of “That’s All Right, Mama” from the set.
Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders were augmented by drummer Bill Vitt, bassist John Kahn and vocalist Sarah Fulcher for their January 23, 1973 concert in San Francisco. The quintet’s version of “That’s All Right, Mama” came towards the middle of their second of two sets at the Boarding House. Garcia and Saunders often played the song written by Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup during the pair’s run together and Jerry later brought “That’s All Right, Mama” to the Jerry Garcia Band’s repertoire. Additionally, Merl, Jerry, the rest of the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band teamed up for a rendition of the song at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. on June 10, 1973.
