Jennifer Hartswick Appears On ‘Comes A Time’ Podcast
An interview with Jennifer Hartswick is featured on the latest episode of Osiris Media podcast Comes A Time. Hartswick spoke about life during the pandemic, performing as part of Trey Anastasio‘s The Beacon Jams, solo work and more with co-hosts Oteil Burbridge and Mike Finoia.
The discussion started with Jennifer talking about living in her current hometown of Nashville and how it seems that nearly everyone in the city works in music. Hartswick and Burbridge recalled their last gigs before the pandemic led to a break in live music.
Jennifer then explained how her participation in The Beacon Jams came together. Hartswick had to quarantine for two weeks before she was able to rehearse and perform with Trey. The trumpeter/vocalist said it felt like they “were having a fun rehearsal” by orienting the band towards the back of the venue instead of facing out towards an empty venue.
The conversation shifted towards the beginning of the pandemic. Hartswick revealed she “went so far inward” during the first four or five months of the pause and didn’t write or perform until she felt ready. Jennifer used that time to enjoy a rare period at home, which came after she and her husband, Chris Chew, moved into a new home.
In 2018, Jennifer Hartswick released a solo album entitled Nexus. Hartswick noted how the LP, which also features Christian McBride and Nick Cassarino, originated and recalled how she first met Christian and Nick. Jennifer went on to discuss the life-changing experience of practicing Reiki.
Oteil, Mike and Jennifer also spoke of the loss of Kofi Burbridge, why surprises are important, a traumatic experience Hartswick went through soon after meeting Chew and more. The podcast ended with Hartswick discussing Trey’s battle with sobriety. Jennifer revealed she was going through personal struggles of her own during a lengthy period in which she wasn’t communicating with Anastasio. She recalled the first rehearsal TAB had after nearly five years and how the dark times helped bring extra soul and emotion to her voice and trumpet playing.
