Happy Birthday Jennifer Hartswick: 5 Standout Guest Appearances

By Scott Bernstein Aug 18, 2020 10:44 am PDT

Today marks the birthday of jam scene fixture Jennifer Hartswick. Jennifer joined the Trey Anastasio Band nearly 20 years ago and also fronts her own band and hit the road for a handful of duo tours with old friend Nick Cassarino in recent years.

Hartswick has collaborated with a who’s who of jam acts over the years, as there aren’t many bands in the scene that she hasn’t performed with. In honor of Jennifer’s birthday, enjoy this list of five standout guest appearances Hartswick made between 2014 and 2018 for your viewing pleasure:

Phish – Suzy Greenberg

While Jennifer has been a member of the Trey Anastasio Band dating back to 2001, she has only made a handful of appearances with Phish. Her first came on April 15, 2004 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, where Hartswick added to a one-timer cover of Jay-Z’s “Girls Girls Girls.” Then, Jennifer and her TAB band mate, trombonist Natalie Cressman were Phish’s special guests on a horn-driven “Suzy Greenberg” at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado on August 29, 2014.

Jennifer and Natalie emerged at the end of the first set after Phish had some fun with their fans. The band spelled out “L-U-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N” with the first letter of each song played to start the show. However, instead of performing the long-lost rarity they had hinted at, the quartet performed “Ha Ha Ha.” Hartswick and Cressman then came out for the set-closing “Suzy Greenberg.” Jennifer also appeared with Phish on both Halloween and New Year’s Eve in 2016.

Soulive – The Ocean

Soulive has regularly held “Bowlive” residencies at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City dating back to 2010. The multi-night runs find the trio joined by special guests each night and Jennifer Hartswick has been among those Soulive has invited to share the stage. Jennifer first appeared with Soulive during the Bowlive III finale in 2012 and returned as a guest on March 14, 2015 as part of Bowlive VI.

Hartswick performed with Soulive for the bulk of the second set on March 14, 2015. Jennifer was also on hand for an encore in which she fronted the trio on a rousing rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean.” The Vermont native is no stranger to the Led Zeppelin repertoire thanks in part to her time with TAB, which has seen her lead the troupe through “Black Dog” and “Dazed & Confused” dozens of times.

Umphrey’s McGee – Total Eclipse Of The Heart

Jennifer Hartswick has a long history of guesting with Umphrey’s McGee that dates back to September 11, 2005, when she joined the sextet for covers of The Lounge Lizards’ “Big Heart” and Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” at Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vermont. She has since made over a dozen appearances with the band, including a handful at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado.

On July 7, 2018 Hartswick helped Umphrey’s McGee close out a three-night run at the scenic venue. Jennifer emerged at the end of the band’s second set to lead them through a debut cover of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart.” Not only did Hartswick duet with UM guitarist Brendan Bayliss on Tyler’s 1983 smash, she also took a trumpet solo to bring the set to a strong finish.

Leftover Salmon – Funky Brass Breakdown Set

Leftover Salmon employed a horn section that featured Hartswick, Cressman and Skerik for a set dubbed “Leftover Salmon’s Funky Brass Breakdown” during the 2018 Northwest String Summit. The horns were on hand for the entire 90-minute performance at Horning’s Hideout in North Plains, Oregon on July 21, 2018.

The band and their guests ran through a collection of LoS originals and choice covers. Leftover Salmon had just released their Something Higher LP and the quasi-title track “Show Me Something Higher” was a highlight as were takes on Parliament’s “Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker),” “Spanish Moon” by Little Feat and Sly & The Family Stone’s “If You Want Me To Stay.”

The String Cheese Incident – This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)

The String Cheese Incident welcomed Jennifer Hartswick as their special guest for the Colorado Kind Festival in 2018. SCI played two sets on September 15, 2018 at Planet Bluegrass in Lyons, Colorado — the venue that hosted the event. Hartswick emerged towards the end of the second frame and also sat-in on the encore.

Hartswick first emerged towards the end of set two to augment Cheese on trumpet for their first version of “Grazin’ In The Grass” since 2004. Jennifer stuck around for a stellar cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” as well as the “Jellyfish” that followed. For the encore, Jennifer Hartswick led The String Cheese Incident on a cover of The Jacksons’ “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground).”
