Last night Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit opened a three-night stand at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Isbell’s wife Amanda Shires, currently touring as a member of The 400 Unit, performed an opening set in which she was joined by her husband for a previously unveiled cover of a The Allman Brothers Band classic. Later in the evening, Isbell and his band also offered up a cover of another song written by the late great Gregg Allman.
Shires opened the evening at the NYC home to the ABB by welcoming Isbell to join her band on guitar as she led a rendition of The Allmans’ hit “Midnight Rider.” The couple were back on stage together throughout the Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit’s headlining set that featured seven of the songs on the just-released new studio album The Nashville Sound.
After concluding the main set with the new album’s rocking track “Anxiety,” the group returned to open the encore with the delicate new ballad “If We Were Vampires.” The band’s first night at The Beacon had one more Allman Brothers tribute as Isbell led the collective through another performance of “Whipping Post,” which was debuted at the recent tour opener.
