Time is an evil mistress on Jam Cruise. Days and nights blur together in a haze of rhythm and salty air. It feels like the MSC Divina only just set sail, yet somehow, the journey is nearly over. The penultimate day of Jam Cruise 22 on Tuesday offered an ocean crossing filled with nonstop music and the vivid swirl of creativity that defines life at sea.

Themes, Talks & Costumes at Sea

A “day at sea” on the Jam Cruise calendar means the music never stops. Performances began around noon and sailed forward into the sunrise. Between sets, the ship buzzed with unique experiences that make this cruise unlike any other.

John Medeski sat down for a “JAMTalks” interview that blended humor and musical philosophy. Nearby, the Moog playshop gave curious fans the chance to experiment with analog synths. A Diggin’ Dirt-hosted costume contest brought laughs and awe in equal measure, while a Positive Legacy silent auction featured a solo piano soundtrack from Eggy's Dani Battat.

Each day aboard Jam Cruise has its own theme, guiding cruisers’ fashion choices and imaginations. Tuesday’s “Album Cover Party” delivered an explosion of creativity. Some roamed the decks dressed as compact-disc icons, while others reached deep into musical history for inspiration. Crowd favorites included a co-ed homage to Ween's Chocolate & Cheese, more than a dozen “ice cream kids” from Europe ’72 and hilarious visual nods to Nevermind and Cowboy Carter. It was the kind of night where every hallway became its own pop-art gallery.

Medeski Martin & Wood’s Jazz-Fueled Collaboration

Medeski Martin & Wood made their return after four years the previous day with a focused trio set. On Tuesday night, the legendary trio took things further, expanding their sonic palette and leaning into collaboration inside the Pantheon Theater.

Keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood opened with “Sequel” and “The Lover” from Friday Afternoon In The Universe. These two tracks encapsulated the trio’s entire ethos: hypnotic, rhythmic, exploratory. The response was electric.

From there, they turned toward jazzier territory on “Seven Deadlies” before igniting crowd elation with the groove-based “Wiggly’s Way.” Saxophone trickster Skerik was the first guest to appear, peppering “Felic” with manic bursts of sound before giving way to a hearty “Nocturne.” As the jam deepened, Lettuce trumpeter Eric ‘Benny’ Bloom joined in, and soon the Lettuce member powered a brassy version of Duke Ellington’s “Caravan” that swung with playful precision.

Then came a once-in-a-lifetime moment: in over three decades together, Medeski Martin & Wood had never featured a vocalist on their version of gospel staple “Is There Anybody Here That Loves My Jesus.” That changed when fresh arrival Datrian Johnson took the stage. His soaring, soulful delivery transformed the spiritual into a show-stopping celebration. The crowd’s cheers lingered long after the final note.

The trio closed with the exuberant “Bubble House” from Shack-man, bolstered again by Skerik and Bloom on horns. It was a set that managed to honor MMW’s improvisational roots while also celebrating connection, collaboration and joy.

The New Mastersounds Say Farewell

Across the deck, The New Mastersounds delivered a milestone of their own. With Jam Cruise marking their final scheduled run as a band, Tuesday’s guest-free Pool Deck set felt like a farewell from old friends. Known for their crisp British funk and telepathic interplay, the quartet dug deep into their instrumental repertoire. The crowd erupted as each tune landed with muscle and warmth. When the four musicians took a final group bow, the applause seemed to stretch out across the Caribbean night.

Smooth Sailing With Lebo’s Yacht Rock

When ALO guitarist Lebo (Dan Lebowitz) resurrected his beloved Yacht Rock project after a one-year pause, the Pool Deck filled immediately with a sea of smiling, dancing cruisers. Lebo assembled an airtight house band featuring keyboardist Aron Magner, The Horn Section, bassist Ashley Galbraith, drummer Simon Allen, vocalist Sammi Garett and percussionist Mike Dillon.

A parade of guests joined in, each steering the band in a new direction. Emma Rose helmed “Lotta Love,” Datrian Johnson tackled Steely Dan’s “Kid Charlemagne,” Ivan Neville grooved through “Turn Your Love Around” and Anna Moss exuded sultry confidence on “Smooth Operator.” Stanton Moore took a guest turn behind the kit for a thunderous and extended “Rosanna.”

Later, Kanika Moore lit up the stage on Michael McDonald’s “I Keep Forgettin’,” which seamlessly transitioned into Warren G and Nate Dogg’s “Regulate” featuring Chali-2na. Garett capped the set with a honeyed version of Fleetwood Mac’s “You Make Loving Fun,” sending the crowd into orbit.

Ivan Neville & The Sweet Lillies Atrium Sets

In the ship’s atrium earlier that evening, Ivan Neville added another soulful chapter to Jam Cruise tradition. What began years ago as intimate solo performances has grown into small, family-style showcases featuring his Dumpstaphunk lineup. They threw down radiant renditions of “Time After Time,” “Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)” and “O-o-h Child,” with Neville’s voice carrying warmth and hope through the towering atrium.

Hours later, Neville reappeared with Colorado string outfit for an entirely different spin on his 1988 tune “Not Just Another Girl.” The Sweet Lillies’ atrium sets have become impromptu super jams, and this one overflowed with energy and guests. Highlights included Sammi Garett singing “Dancing Queen” and “Turn the Beat Around,” George Porter Jr. leading his joyous “Sing a Happy Song” and Chali 2na weaving his booming freestyle over the grooves.

Everyone Orchestra’s Mood of Joy

Late in the afternoon, the Pantheon Theater buzzed with spontaneous creation as conductor Matt Butler once again led Everyone Orchestra. With Phish drummer Jon Fishman anchoring the rhythms, Butler guided a sprawling all-star lineup including Cimafunk, Adam Smirnoff, Brett McConnell, Jamie Masefield, Aron Magner, The Horn Section, Lebo and vocalists Anna Moss, Ariana and Kanika Moore.

Improvised lyrics centered on happiness and compassion as the ensemble moved organically through a kaleidoscope of grooves. Each musician had space to shine, taking turns blending into the swirl or driving the jam forward. The crowd left glowing, as though they had collectively breathed the same musical exhale.

The Jam Room’s Late-Night Laboratory

As the hours rolled deep into night, Eggy guitarist Jake Brownstein turned the Jam Room into a playground for spontaneous creation. His goal was to bring the concept back to its roots: no structure, no rehearsed songs, just free-flowing collaboration among whoever happened to wander in.

Brownstein first took the stage with Eggy bandmates Alex Bailey and Mike Goodman, along with guitarist Mihali, his horn players and keyboardists Aron Magner and Eli Winderman. Together they shaped a shifting, cinematic jam that evolved from delicate pulses to heavy funk and back again.

Later, Marc Brownstein, who was introduced humorously by Jake as “my son,” joined the fun alongside new additions Lebo and Dani Battat for another groove that showcased the full delight of musical chemistry. Throughout the three-hour session, new mini-ensembles seemed to form with every tune.

At one point, Datrian Johnson improvised lyrics drawn from disparate songs over Brownstein’s hypnotic lines. Eventually, all four members of Eggy reunited for the finale, closing the session around 5 a.m. as weary but ecstatic fans drifted toward breakfast.

Nearing the Voyage’s End

With the horizon growing faintly pink once again, Jam Cruise 22 began steering toward its final stop. The MSC Divina arrives at MSC’s private island, Ocean Cay in the Bahamas, on Wednesday. One last night of music awaits before this floating community of musicians and fans returns to land, hearts full and ears ringing from another unforgettable journey at sea.
