Ira Kaplan & Georgia Hubley Join Original Members Of The Feelies In New Jersey

The original members of influential New Jersey-based rock band The Feelies came together for a pair of special concerts this weekend to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band’s formation. Among the guests joining Glenn Mercer, Bill Million, Keith DeNunzio and Vinny DeNunzio were fellow New Jerseyans, Yo La Tengo guitarist Ira Kaplan and drummer Georgia Hubley.

The Woodlands in Maplewood, New Jersey hosted the celebratory events last Friday and Saturday nights. Both shows began with an acoustic set by the current lineup of The Feelies that came together when the group reunited in 2008 after calling it quits soon after the release of their 1991 album Time For A Witness. Mercer, Million and Stan Demeski, Brenda Sauter and Dave Weckerman then played an electric set of originals. Each night then saw the original The Feelies members take the stage to play “My Little Red Book” by Burt Bacharach and the Neil Diamond/The Monkees hit “I’m A Believer” along with favorites “Forces At Work” and “Fa Cé-La.”

The four-song set was followed by Kaplan emerging to assist on several covers, with his wife Hubley partaking in Friday night’s sit-in.The pair of YLT band mates joined in during parts of the multi-staged encore on “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey” by The Beatles, “Looking At You” by MC5, Television’s “See No Evil,” “Astral Plane” by The Modern Lovers, “I Can’t Stand It” by The Velvet Underground and “Child Of The Moon” by The Rolling Stones. Saturday’s show also saw Kaplan contribute to The VU’s “What Goes On” and “White Light/White Heat.”
