Last year pianist Holly Bowling released her debut album Distillation Of A Dream: The Music Of Phish Reimagined For Solo Piano via Royal Potato Family. The LP featured note-for-note re-creations of Phish’s versions of “Tweezer” from their July 31, 2013 Lake Tahoe show, “The Wedge” from their July 20, 2014 show in Chicago and “Twist” from their October 23, 2013 show in Glens Falls. While Holly has previously issued the “Tahoe Tweezer” on vinyl, it will soon have a partner.

The second vinyl release in Holly Bowling‘s continuing series of solo piano jam transcriptions features the “Chicago Wedge” and “Glens Falls Twist.” Pressed on 150-gram red transparent vinyl and featuring album artwork from a linocut print by Isadora Bullock, the release will only be available as a 500 unit limited edition pressing. Here’s what Holly had to say about this record:

Of the two jams, the Chicago Wedge is definitely the better known of the two, but the Glens Falls Twist is a seriously underrated jam and is stunningly beautiful. I think it’s little known only because there were so many amazing moments of improvisation to come out of that fall tour that it gets overshadowed. Give it a listen. It’s a two-part jam, with each half being entirely different in character. Darkness vs light. Chiaroscuro. Dissonance vs harmony. Minor vs major. Driving energy and rhythms vs floating, soaring melodies. It’s worth your time, I promise.

I picked this jam to explore as a jam transcription because I could envision the ethereal second half translating well to the piano and really using its resonance. And because its a study in contrasts and opposites and balance and I love that. And because I couldn’t get that hauntingly beautiful melody out of my head, and I’m betting it will get stuck in yours too.
