Hiss Golden Messenger released Seven Dollars: a Benefit for North Carolina Food Assistance. All proceeds from the 11-track album will aid the North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children.
The benefit record from MC Taylor comes as SNAP (or food stamp) benefits have been paused due to the government shutdown. HGM has stepped up to help and detailed the Seven Dollars: a Benefit for North Carolina Food Assistance via Bandcamp:
100% of the proceeds from the sale of this recording benefit the North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children (ncfpsc.org). In light of the emerging food crisis due to the pause of SNAP benefits, the Foundation is stepping up to provide for food needs for students whose families depend on those benefits. Every dollar donated will go toward helping to ensure that children have the nourishment and stability they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
The average daily SNAP benefit is about $6.17 to $6.31 per person, which equates to roughly $7 USD per day, though the actual figure is slightly lower. Everyone deserves food on their table.
Seven Dollars features M.C. Taylor offering solo acoustic takes of songs from across the Hiss Golden Messenger catalog including “Harder Rain” and “Jenny of the Roses” off 2017’s Hallelujah Anyhow, “Drum” from Lateness of Dancers (2014) and “I Need a Teacher” off 2019’s Terms of Surrender.
Taylor captured Seven Dollars live at Outpost in the Burbs — a nonprofit outreach organization dedicated to building community through music, service, and cultural programs — in Montclair, New Jersey, on October 18, 2025. M.C. Taylor mixed and mastered the album at Dad’s Bar & Grill in Durham, North Carolina.
