Herbie Hancock & Jefferson Airplane To Receive Lifetime Achievement Grammys

Today, The Recording Academy revealed the class of 2016 Special Merit Grammy Awards recipients. The 2016 class of Lifetime Achievement Award recipients includes Herbie Hancock, Jefferson Airplane, Ruth Brown, Celia Cruz, Linda Ronstadt, Run-D.M.C and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The Recording Academy also announced this year’s Trustees Award honorees are John Cage, Fred Foster and Chris Strachwitz. Technical Grammy Awards will be given to EMT and Dr. Harvey Fletcher.

“Each year, The Academy has the distinct privilege of honoring those who have greatly contributed to our industry and cultural heritage, and this year we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees,” said president/CEO of The Recording Academy Neil Portnow. “Their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.”

Active between 1967 and 1972 and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, Jefferson Airplane has never won a Grammy Award. Hancock has won 14 Grammys during his career beginning with his first in 1983 and including a win in the Album of the Year category in 2008 for his 2008 River: The Joni Letters.

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards will air live on CBS on February 15 at 8 p.m. ET.
