Today would have been masterful soul singer Marvin Gaye’s 81st birthday had he not been tragically shot and killed by his father one day shy of his 45th birthday in April 1984. The legend of Motown Records left an enduring legacy of some of the best and most recognizable performances in music history despite his abbreviated career.

The man behind such seminal American R&B recordings as “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” “Too Busy Thinking About My Baby,” “Let’s Get It On” and the groundbreaking 1971 LP What’s Going On, was a force to be reckoned with and the epitome of a timeless voice.
