Happy Birthday Jon Fishman: Fish Performs With Marco Benevento & Reed Mathis In 2008
By Scott Bernstein Feb 19, 2017 • 8:36 am PST
Drummer Jon Fishman was born in Philadelphia on this date in 1965. He was soon adopted and grew up in Syracuse area. Upon attending school at the University of Vermont he was a founding member and namesake of Phish, a band that is still going strong 34 years later. While we devoted Saturday Stream to his work fronting Phish, today we profile a performance from 2008 with another group.
In November of 2008 keyboardist Marco Benevento was scheduled to embark on a series of three dates with bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Andrew Barr. However, Barr’s tour with the band Land Of Talk was extended and he had to cancel on Marco. Thankfully, Fishman stepped up to fill Andrew’s role for the three shows as well as a fourth concert that was added. As of now audio from just one of those Marco, Reed and Fish shows is available on the Live Music Archive, but what a show it was.
On November 7, 2008 the Benevento/Mathis/Fishman trio played Real Art Ways in Hartford to begin the run. The threesome mixed Marco originals such as “Atari,” “The Real Morning Party” and “Bus Ride” with a diverse collection of covers including “Golden” (My Morning Jacket), “She’s Not There” (The Zombies) and “Friends” (Led Zeppelin). Despite the group coming together at the last minute, the show came off well and displays the massive talents of all three musicians. Listen to an audience recording below as well as bonus footage of the trio covering Pink Floyd’s “Fearless” from a different night on the run.
