Happy Birthday Jennifer Hartswick: 10 Collaborations With Umphrey’s McGee
By Scott Bernstein Aug 18, 2017 • 11:29 am PDT
Today marks vocalist and trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick birthday after a celebration yesterday in the City of Mobile. Hartswick was made a honorary citizen of the city by its mayor and then headlined a concert at Brickyard Dauphin Street. Jennifer might be best known to our readers for her long and impressive tenure as a member of the Trey Anastasio Band, but she also is one of the most frequent guests in Umphrey’s McGee history.
Hartswick first sat-in with Umphrey’s McGee on September 11, 2005 on covers of The Lounge Lizards’ “Big Heart” and “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers at Higher Ground in Burlington, Vermont. Jennifer hit it off with the band that night and on the off day that followed. She has gone on to guest with UM a total of 27 times on 66 songs (47 different tunes).
The most recent JHa/UM collaboration took place on July 2, 2017 at Red Rocks, where Hartswick led the six-piece on a debut cover of “Red Barchetta” by Rush as well as the mashup “Electric Avenue To Hell” – a song on which she contributed to the studio version found on Zonkey. In honor of Jennifer’s birthday, here’s either audio or video of 10 standout collaborations with Umphrey’s McGee followed by a complete list of each of Hartswick’s appearances with UM:
