Gregg Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy & More Cover ‘The Weight’ At Mavis Staples Tribute

On November 19, 2014 the Mavis Staples: I’ll Take You There – An All-Star Concert Celebration was held at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. Blackbird Presents has announced the official live album and concert film release as well as the upcoming broadcast premiere on AXS TV of the star-studded tribute to Mavis Staples. Official video footage of the all-star finale has been posted in advance of the upcoming CD/DVD release on June 2.
Performers paying tribute to the iconic vocalist who rose to fame with her family as a member of The Staples Singers and forged a successful solo career included Gregg Allman, Widespread Panic, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Taj Mahal, Michael McDonald, Grace Potter, Aaron Neville, Joan Osborne and Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, among others. AXS TV will screen the concert special on April 16 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
“That night was really special,” Staples said in a statement. “To be able to see so many of my friends up there performing songs that I’ve sung for years was just incredible. I couldn’t wait to get up there and take the stage myself! It was a night I’ll never forget.”
