Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes Nicki Bluhm & Deren Ney In Chicago

By Scott Bernstein Jan 3, 2016 1:18 pm PST

Last night Greensky Bluegrass concluded their New Year’s Run at The Vic in Chicago with a show that featured guest appearances from vocalist Nicki Bluhm and guitarist Deren Ney of support act Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers to end the first set.

Deren emerged towards the close of the first set, which started with “Auld Lang Syne,” to lend a hand on a cover of The Wood Brothers’ “Luckiest Man” and Greensky’s “Frederico.” Then, Nicki came out to duet with mandolin wiz Paul Hoffman on the Michigan band’s stellar cover of “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac. A marathon second set was highlighted by two song sandwiches. “Tarpology” went into and out of “One Slip” a few times before it concluded, while “Don’t Lie” featured a cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” in the middle. Greensky Bluegrass ended the show and run with a “Demons”/”Drink Up And Go Home” encore.
