Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes John Popper & Skerik In Seattle

By Scott Bernstein Mar 26, 2016 7:48 am PDT

Michigan jamgrass act Greensky Bluegrass had a huge Friday yesterday in Seattle. Not only did they perform in front of a huge crowd at Safeco Field in the afternoon as part of a rally for Bernie Sanders, but they then put on a full show at The Showbox featuring guest spots from John Popper of Blues Traveler and saxophonist Skerik.

The action started in the late afternoon at presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ Safeco Field rally, which reportedly drew 15,000 ahead of today’s Washington Democratic Caucuses. Greensky started the brief set with their own “Windshield” before covering Bill Monroe’s “I’m Working On A Building.” The group then treated the crowd to originals “Lose My Way” and “Burn Them.” Next, Popper came out to lead Greensky on Blues Traveler hits “Run Around” and “Hook” ahead of his own solo performance of the National Anthem.

Later in the night, Greensky reprised their Popper collaboration at The Showbox. After a brief trip to Canada for a show in Vancouver on Thursday night, Greensky Bluegrass opened the two-set show with a cover of Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re An American Band.” The Blues Traveler frontman joined them for a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Mr. Charlie” and another take on “Hook.” In the second set, Skerik added to a lengthy portion of the closing stanza that included “Just To Lie,” a version of “Tarpology” with a cover of Paul Simon’s “Gumboots” in the middle, “I’d Probably Kill You” and “Demons.” The evening’s encore saw crew member Keith Kinnear add tambourine to “After Midnight.”
