Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes Larry Keel, Sam Bush & More At Hoxeyville

Last night Greensky Bluegrass played their first of two headlining sets at the Hoxeyville Music Festival in Wellston, Michigan. The string band is helping celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Americana-heavy fest, and welcomed some of their favorite musicians to join them during the set.

Greensky Bluegrass opened up the night with “Just Listening,” which was followed by a cover of Bruce Hornsby’s “King Of The Hill,” from the pianist’s 1998 release Spirit Trail. Next up came takes on “Room Without A Roof,” “Into The Rafters” and “Living Over.” The first surprise of the night came next as Greensky guitarist Dave Bruzza invited out Larry Keel and Stephen Mougin of the Sam Bush Band for a take on Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “The Message.” The socially conscious hip-hop tune was played as trio for its debut performance.

The Michigan-based next offered up “Hoxeyville,” their original ode to the festival, which they debuted back in 2005. After a short weather-related break the band returned to the stage by sandwiching a take on J.J. Cale’s “After Midnight” in between their own “Broke Mountain Breakdown.” GSBG welcomed Sam Bush to the stage next, with the mandolin player joining their for a take on “The Four” and a cover of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs “Bringing In The Georgia Mail.” A take on “Windshield” followed, with the band closing out the night with a major bust out, a cover of “Young Turks.” The Rod Stewart track from his 1981 release Tonight I’m Yours was played for just the third time ever, and for the first time since April of 2012.
