Greensky Bluegrass kicked off the Icelandic edition of their Camp Greensky event with a Welcome Set on Friday. The band closed out the intimate affair at Reykjavík’s Ægisgarður brewery with a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.”
GSBG kicked off the set — which saw the quintet perform unplugged around two mics — with the staple “Past My Prime” ahead of Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freight Liner Blues.” The band then brought out the oldie “Tuesday Letter” for the first time in 2023 followed by a newer tune in “Grow Together,” off the group’s 2022 LP, Stress Dreams.
Greensky then dusted off “Jesus On The Mainline.” The traditional associated with hill country blues great Mississippi Fred McDowell was last played by GSBG in 2020 for their Leap Year Sessions livestream series. It was last played to an in-person audience on December 29, 2019 in Milwaukee, as per Phantasy Tour. The Bruce Springsteen-penned, The Band-recorded favorite “Atlantic City” came next.
After the rarity “Through The Trees,” — last time played on February 23, 2022 for a gap of 93 shows — the band offered “Merely Avoiding.” The Stanley Brothers’ bluegrass standard “Pig In A Pen” then prefaced Joshua Davis’ “Dustbowl Overtures.” Next, “Into The Rafters” counted as the penultimate song of the set ahead of Keith Allison’s “Freeborn Man” to close.
Greensky Bluegrass returned to encore with Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” According to Phantasy Tour stats, GSBG has played the Rumours classic just 28 times since debuting it in 2014. Mandolinist Paul Hoffman and bassist Mike Devol led the sing-along before Anders Beck took over with a scorching dobro solo during the jam with the audience joining back in on the iconic coda.
