Greensky Bluegrass & Leftover Salmon :: 7.23.16 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre :: Morrison, CO

On Saturday Michigan jamgrass act Greensky Bluegrass played one of the biggest gigs of their 16-year career when they headlined the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado for the first time. Colorado’s own Leftover Salmon, a band that was a major influence on Greensky, kicked off the festivities. Members of LoS wound up sitting-in with GSBG for portions of both sets.

Leftover Salmon’s set saw drummer Alwyn Robinson and banjo wiz Andy Thorn make their Red Rocks debut and new keyboardist Erik Deutsch perform at the famed venue for the first time as a member of the group. If there’s such a thing as a hit when it comes to jamgrass act, it would be Greensky’s catchy and emotional “Windshield” which began GSBG’s first of two sets. A pairing of staples “Just To Lie” and “The Four” came next ahead of “Worried About The Weather” and Greensky’s cover of “Time” by Pink Floyd.

Towards the end of the first set LoS frontmen Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt emerged for the Leftover Salmon original “Woody Guthrie” as well as a cover of Jimmy Martin’s “Hit Parade Of Love.” Greensky’s Paul Hoffman then led his mates through the debut of his “Past My Prime” which he had performed at solo shows in the past. “Living Over” closed out the first GSBG set.

The second set started with fan favorites “Letter To Seymour” and “In Control” ahead of a version of “Can’t Stop Now” featuring contributions from Andy Thorn of LoS. Last night’s second set also featured a cover of Traffic’s “Light Up Or Leave Me Alone,” an unusual upbeat version of “Old Barns” and one of the newer songs in the repertoire, “For Sure, Uh Huh,” which GSBG debuted last year. The closing stanza came to a close with a “Broke Mountain Breakdown” sandwich complete with a “Forever Young” (Bob Dylan) filling. Greensky Bluegrass said farewell with a “Leap Year” encore.
