See Greensky Bluegrass Wrap A ‘Tarp(ology)’ Around Debut Don Henley Cover At Summer Tour Closer
The jamgrass act unveiled their take on “The Boys Of Summer” on August 19, 2023 in Jacksonville, Oregon.
Greensky Bluegrass shared official video of a song sandwich played at the final show of their summer tour on August 19 in Jacksonville, Oregon. The footage documents a well-jammed take on “Tarpology” from the show at Britt Pavilion featuring a debut cover of Don Henley’s “The Boys Of Summer” within.
Instrumental jam vehicle “Tarpology” dates back to dobroist Anders Beck‘s time in Wayword Sons, a pre-GSBG outfit that also included Benny “Burle” Galloway on bass, guitarist Pete Kartsounes and keyboardist Gregg Andrulis. Beck brought the song with him to Greensky upon joining in 2007.
Don Henley wrote the lyrics to “The Boys Of Summer” which features music composed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. Henley included the song on his sophomore studio album Building The Perfect Beast in 1984. “The Boys Of Summer” made it to the No. 5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and topped the magazine’s Top Rock Tracks chart.
GSBG mandolinist Paul Hoffman handled lead vocals on the band’s debut “The Boys Of Summer” cover. The quintet expertly jammed “Tarpology” into the fitting number after linking “Before Bring Out Your Dead” and “Bring Out Your Dead” to start the second set in Jacksonville and then went back to improvisation mode after the final lyrics.
Other highlights from Greensky’s summer tour closer were the 20-minute “Don’t Lie” that ended the second set, a rare take on the Billy Strings/Paul Hoffman co-write “In The Morning Light,” the band’s second cover of Bob Marley’s “Stop That Train” of 2023 and an emotion-laden “Grow Together” encore.
